AGA INTERIOR DESIGN, BRINGING THE BEACH IN

July 28, 2022 AGA Design

A few years ago, we were contacted to help a family with the redecoration of their home. The house was a 1920's Victorian style property located in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts. Originally a storefront, the home received multiple additions over the years, which increased the square footage and created the current rambling feel. Historically the property had many different uses and prior to my clients, it was the residence of writer Bruce Porter, who wrote the book "Blow" (which later became a motion picture starring Johnny Depp.)

This active young family and two labradoodles loves all things coastal. The number one goal was to bring the beach inside. We compiled a palette of soft green, blue, and taupe. Our goal was to create a well layered and coastal feel. Weathered wood details and breezy window treatments were added to evoke the ease of seaside living. Classic stripes and monochromatic patterns were added for subtle interest.

The living room flows into the den, so we kept with a similar palette but incorporated warm brown and slate blue for a cozier feel.

On the stairs, we chose a foggy gray and tan stripe to mimic the sea on a foggy day.

In the master bedroom, we used the existing beige wall to set the tone. We incorporated a linen upholstered headboard and sea foam green accents, for a serene escape from the rest of the house.

The family’s mom frequently travels and works late hours for her outside role as a lawyer. She requested to transform an unused second floor room into a “zen room” - a space where she could practice yoga, read, and relax.

Here we incorporated “zen-like” items, such as a water fountain, plants, a woven basket for yoga mats, and an oversized comfy sectional for relaxation. We chose a salty-weathered palette to maintain the coastal feel and incorporated a textural wallcovering to mimic shingles on a seaside cottage.

In the second floor hall we incorporated nautical blues for interest.

The family is originally from Pennsylvania and requested that their guest rooms be cheerful and welcoming for visitors. In this guest bedroom we opted for a clean look with blue walls and crisp white linens. Perfect for a blissful night’s sleep.

And no home is complete without a work from home space, or two. Here is an office that we created on the second floor. The room was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Annie Wildey, and her incredible surf paintings. We finalized the room with a framed print of one of her original works.

COASTAL GRANDMOTHER, WHAT TO WEAR

July 27, 2022 AGA Design

Fashion and interior design are directly related. When I start working with a new client, I always look to see what they are wearing. Maybe it's a color that they are drawn to or a specific pattern.

You may never see me in a bucket hat, but here are a few of my favorite early summer items to help you achieve the coastal grandmother look.

Nantucket Looms, Cream Boatneck Sweater

JCrew, Wide Leg Seaside Linen Pant

Alice Walk, Mock Neck Sweater

Aerin, Linen Mule

Mark & Graham, Palm Leaf Tote

COASTAL GRANDMOTHER, INSPIRATION

July 26, 2022 AGA Design

Rain or shine, there is nothing like a day by the sea. A sunny afternoon at the beach is the best, but a cozy foggy or dreary day can be just as beautiful. For this reason, I have a pinterest board devoted to moody seaside photographs. Whenever I feel stressed or need inspiration, I find that it is the perfect place to take a moment.

Enjoy!

MEET THE COASTAL GRANDMOTHER AESTHETIC

July 25, 2022 AGA Design

Design trends are influenced by many different factors, including current affairs and politics. After a wild few years, there is an urge to return to what is comfortable, familiar, and nostalgic. Although the world is open again, we want our homes to be an oasis and a place to escape from the chaos of the world. Meet the coastal grandmother aesthetic. The trend embraces calming palettes, layered textures, and a breezy understated lifestyle. As a thirty three year old, I can confidently state that I have embraced the coastal grandmother aesthetic for years.

I typically opt for monochromatic outfits and as we transition into the warmer months, my go to is always a white on white or beige on white palette. For example; white jeans, a cream sweater, and a pair of sand or light colored mules or flats. I love a coastal inspired interior, maybe this is why my husband refers to our master bedroom as "the Cape Cod Bedroom." But it doesn't shout coastal with cheesy nick-knacks and beach signs. It is an understated and relaxed look, featuring soft blues, greens, creams, and warm beiges that evoke the feeling of the seaside - overall it is a welcoming, serene, and timeless look.

I can easily say that Ina Garten was my first coastal grandmother muse. My friend Martha and I used to tune into her show, once a week during college. We loved her seaside living and breezy entertaining style. "How easy is that?" Then Nancy Meyer's, Something's Gotta Give, was the ultimate inspiration for interior design, fashion, and lifestyle.

After a stressful few years, we all understand the importance of a welcoming and relaxing home. Soft palettes, cozy textures, and timeless details. Over the next few posts, I will share coastal inspiration, interiors, fashion, and a past AGA Interior Design project with a bit of coastal grandmother flair.

AGA INTERIOR DESIGN, BACK BAY BLUES

May 6, 2022 AGA Design

Almost ten years of on and off blogging have inspired me to write about everything from vacations, to fashion, to recent art exhibits. I find it funny that I have never used the AGA Design Blog as a platform to share my interior design projects. It is time we changed this!

Throughout the start, execution, and completion of an interior design project, much thought goes into each detail. I constantly assess how each selection will work within the room and throughout the entire home. The beginning phase is crucial for listening and observing my clients. I also like to study the background of the property - How old is the home? Who was the architect? What is the architectural style and who lived here?

As a designer, I feel that it is my obligation to design interiors that reflect the homeowner, but also remain true to the history of the property. Our most recent project is rich in Boston’s Back Bay history.

Here is a look at the history, design process, and final space!

Our client reached out with the goal to brighten her Back Bay living room in “The Coolidge House.”

The house was built in 1880 - 1881 for iron and steel manufacturer, George Parsons King. Architect, William Whitney Lewis designed the home and it was featured in great detail in the July 23, 1882 Boston Sunday Globe. After several different owners, the property was transformed into a lodging house in 1940, called "The Duchess House.” In the late 1970's the residence was divided into six condominiums, which remain in use today. Here is an architectural rendering from 1881:

During our preliminary meeting, we established the need for a custom area rug to better fit the space. We also emphasized the need for furniture that was appropriate for the scale of the room. Our client requested that the design reference her home on Martha’s Vineyard. She wanted to walk into an airy, welcoming, and uplifting living room filled with blue and white. Here is a look at the before:

The original fireplace served as great inspiration for the design. Here is a photo and our presentation mood board:

Two family chairs were to be reupholstered in a blue and white woven fabric. The paint was tweaked from a light blue with subtle aqua, to a soft blue, with a hint of periwinkle. A sofa with a curved back was selected to interrupt the linear lines of the windows and shutters, but also mimic the curved details of the tray ceiling. We also incorporated a woven coffee table for texture. And splatter table lamps were added on either side of the sofa for balanced symmetry and lighting during darker hours.

Details on the history of the building were gathered from Back Bay Houses and Boston Sunday Globe. Final project photography by Sarah Winchester Studios.

MASSACHUSETTS TO MAUI

April 29, 2022 AGA Design

We could all use a vacation after the ups and downs of the past few years. Travel is back and Scott and I are ready to go. For years we have dreamt of a vacation to Hawaii and I could not be more excited!

I was recently inspired to write this post after a client asked me if I bought anything new for our trip. It has been a while since I felt inspired or had the time to focus on the AGA Design Blog. I am sure you can relate to my departure; life, work, everything...it sucks up your time and before you know it, it has been weeks, months, or even years. So hello again and here we go, a blog post devoted to a few of my recent purchases for travel, beach time, and happy hours.

TRAVEL

We live in Boston, so the trip to Hawaii is a long one. I have never been on a flight this long, so I am a little anxious. Whenever I travel I bring an oversized scarf or wrap because I tend to get chilly from the airport and plane AC. These oversized cashmere wraps come in great colors, like this beautiful blue, and work well for travel or cool nights while away. I don't go anywhere without a pair of Stan Smith sneakers. They can be dressed up or dressed down and they are super comfortable. I purchased a Cuyana leather tote for a friend a few years ago, but finally bought one for myself. It offers so much space and Cuyana has all sorts of organizational add ons! And I always turn to my favorite water Laneige mask before and after a flight, to battle the effects of dry plane air.

JCrew Oversized Cashmere Wrap in Beach Blue

Cuyana System Tote, Light Stone

Adidas Stan Smith, Navy & White

Lineage Water Sleeping Mask

BEACH

When I am at the beach I opt for all things white. The JCrew String Bikini is a longtime favorite and never goes out of style. I recently discovered Frank & Eileen, their linen shirts are a dream and come in a variety of colors and different lengths. In addition to a white shirt for the beach, I bought a longer black shirt that could easily be dressed up or down for summer attire. And an oversized straw bag, beach hat, and sunglasses are also always on hand for a beach day.

Frank & Eileen, White Linen Shirt

JCrew, String Bikini Top

French Baskets

Warby Parker, Ada Sunglasses in Acorn Tortoise

Club Monaco, Travel Hat

HAPPY HOUR

When you are on vacation every hour is happy hour. Throw on a breezy caftan and a few coastal inspired accessories, and you are ready to go from beach chair to beach bar. All you need is a mai tai!

Emerson Fry, Francina Caftan

Rebecca de Ravenel, Bon Bon Earrings

AERIN, Seashell Bracelet

Gaia's Ark Mini

RETURN FLIGHT...

When our vacation comes to an end and we return to Boston, I will continue to use all of these items. I hope they inspire your vacation, summer, or day to day wardrobe.

Aloha!

xx

AGA'S TOP 5 MUST HAVES FOR SUMMER TABLESCAPES

June 19, 2020 AGA Design
Must Haves .jpg

At this time, we may not be able to host large gatherings with friends and families, but this doesn’t mean you can’t set your summer table. Growing up my mum always set the table, whether it we were having one of her amazing dinners or Chinese take out. We always had fresh flowers from the garden, a crisp table cloth, and candles. This was something I looked forward to every night and now that I am out of the nest I try to maintain some of these same nightly traditions.

With this in mind, I thought I would share my five must haves for setting a summer table…

#1 SET THE TONE WITH A TABLECLOTH

Think of your table cloth as the first layer. This is where you establish your color palette and it is a great opportunity to add pattern.

Screenshot 2020-06-16 at 10.01.31 PM copy.png

#2 PERFECT PLATES

I typically opt for crisp white plates because they go with everything.

Screen Shot 2020-05-31 at 2.51.57 PM.png

#3 CUTLERY

Invest in a good set of cutlery.

Screen Shot 2020-05-31 at 2.43.50 PM.png

#4 FLORALS IN THE MIDDLE

Center your table with one large vase or a variety of smaller vases filled with fresh seasonal flowers.

#5 GLASS HURRICANES

A pair of glass hurricanes are perfect for anytime of year, but especially in the summertime. Include a pillar candle and add a bit of sand for a coastal touch.

SET YOUR SUMMER TABLE

June 18, 2020 AGA Design
1.jpg

With all of the challenges that we have faced over the past few months, we can all agree that time with family and friends is more valuable than ever. As we step into summer I find myself missing family gatherings. I crave time spent enjoying good wine and food with loved ones, and the urge to entertain is stronger than ever with the current warmer weather and long sun filled days.

My hope is that our carefree gatherings and fun will return sooner rather than later. In the meantime, I thought I would share inspiration for your next summer table.

Over the past three years I have participated in Boston’s Heading Home to Dinner. The event brings members of the Boston design community together to raise money and awareness for Heading Home Inc. This wonderful foundation is devoted to helping low income families and individuals with housing, food, and other resources to get back on their feet.

Now more than ever, we need to help those in need. Please join the Boston community and #shareyourtable in support of Heading Home. Visit www.headinghomeinc.org to donate. You can also join us for this year’s #Pause4Peace on September 29th, for an opportunity to tune in for a live video of the past three years and donate.

SUMMER FEELING

June 17, 2020 AGA Design

Summer is my favorite time of year. I love the traditions, activities, and events that these months welcome. Cookouts, time spent at the beach, and ample amounts of fresh air help give summer a carefree feel.

Nothing shouts summer, like blue hydrangeas. So to get everyone in the summer spirit, here is some blue hydrangea inspiration.

Enjoy!

PAINTED FLOORS

June 2, 2020 AGA Design
95a6a07af52a018bac2e1238aba885b9.jpg

Growing up my parents chose to paint many of the floors in our antique colonial home. We had beautiful wide plank floor boards, that lent themselves as the perfect canvas for high gloss colors. My childhood bedroom features a yellow wallpaper with a stripe and floral pattern, to finish the room the floors were painted a high gloss yellow. I believe that this is where my love of painted floors came to life.

Here is a bit of painted floor inspiration.

MEMORIAL DAY GETAWAY

May 22, 2020 AGA Design
Water-e1503410383874.jpg

This is a strange year for many. Birthdays have been postponed, graduations cancelled, and vacations left in limbo. Memorial Day weekend typically marks the beginning of Summer and a time to escape to your beach house or favorite warm weather spot. I find myself struggling with the fact that my annual getaways are on hold as my Groundhog Day-esque routine continues.

This weekend or the weekend before would typically mark my first trip to the island of Nantucket. So as I pack my beach bag to head to the back lawn, I wanted to take a moment to share one of my favorite Nantucket beach houses, designed by one of my longtime design muses.

Victoria Hagan’s home is filled with large windows and French doors, that open to stunning views of Nantucket Harbor. The home has a wonderful way of marrying inside and out for a casual yet sophisticated feel. Hagan pairs tailored pieces, with relaxed slipcovered furniture and coastal textures. Looking at these photos you can almost feel the sea breeze sweeping through the screen.

Whether you are heading to a local Summer spot or enjoying a stay-cation in your backyard, I wish you a Happy Memorial Day weekend!

xx

AGA'S TOP 5 SUGGESTIONS FOR KITCHEN DESIGN

May 13, 2020 AGA Design

As a result of social distancing and restaurant closings, we are spending more time than ever in the kitchen. I love to cook and especially bake. There is something very special about preparing and enjoying a meal with family. I also love the creative aspect of playing with various spices and techniques to create your own unique recipes. Growing up, my mom cooked the majority of our meals. She is a wonderful cook and I credit her to my skills and adventurous nature in the kitchen.

All of this time spent cooking at home may inspire you to embark on a kitchen renovation. Maybe a reconfiguration for better access to appliances or a refresh of finishes for a cleaner look?

With this in mind, I thought I would share my top 5 suggestions for kitchen design....

#1 CENTER YOUR SINK AT A WINDOW

Wash your dishes with a view! And this also creates a great focal point for the room.

ecb3b7bbc17aa278208d40e266419600.jpg

#2 DON’T SUPER-SIZE YOUR ISLAND

There is nothing worse than a massive island that you can’t reach across. This is far too much wasted space and reduces the intimate feel of a kitchen.

51af1d727718a2fc214ad9077056de7e.jpg

#3 LIGHTING IS KEY AND SCALE IS EVERYTHING

Scale is everything when it comes to design. One of my biggest pet peeves is when the lighting is too small in a space, especially over a kitchen island or sink. When in doubt go bigger, rather than smaller.

cba545599edfa4dd8af4ae082ebe05cf.jpg

#4 STORAGE, STORAGE, AND MORE STORAGE!

Get those utensils, spices, and appliances off your counters. I suggest working with a professional to ensure that you’re maximizing your storage space.

68ca3bfecbb00044f42513b2d09be6e3.jpg

#5 OPT FOR A TIMELESS COLOR PALETTE AND FINISHES

Don’t go with something trendy. Stick to timeless selections, your future self will thank you.

WOOED BY WICKER

I love a good piece of wicker furniture! It's timeless, understated, and adds great texture to any room. Wicker and rattan furniture has a strong history, with roots in ancient civilization all over the globe. Today a collection of wicker or rattan pairs well together or individually with other pieces.

With this being said, I'm very excited for Sarah Bartholomew's recent collaboration with Mainly Baskets Home. The collaction features an array of wicker items including everything from lamps to sofas. Here's a look...

WHAT TO WEAR, AT HOME

May 1, 2020 AGA Design
Screen Shot 2020-05-01 at 11.39.14 AM.png

With all of this time at home, what are you wearing everyday?

I have to admit, I fell into a bad cycle of pjs and yoga pants for the first few weeks of quarantine. Then I snapped out of it. There's something about getting dressed that makes the entire day feel so much more productive. A pair of shoes helps too!

Some favor a kimono or caftan. Here in New England it's still a bit chilly, so I'm all about the cashmere wrap. I love to pair this with a long sleeve shirt or lightweight sweater. If you're feeling ambitious, throw on a pair of white jeans or maybe just stick with your favorite leggings. A cashmere wrap is cozy, comfy, and instantly takes your attire up a notch.

We could all use a little inspiration these days, so I figured I'd share a few of my favorite cashmere wraps for time spent at home...and when we return to work, these wraps are perfect frigid office AC.

Enjoy!

SEASIDE DREAMS

April 23, 2020 AGA Design
AGA-Beverly-GuestRoom-2 copy.jpg

Now more than ever, our homes are our safe haven; a place for school, work, virtual workout classes, and family time As we continue to do our part by staying home, I can't help but dream of a different place for quarantine. Maybe a sunny California villa with a large pool in the backyard? Or a ski chalet nestled in serene mountain tops?

All sound great, but my heart is at the seaside and I dream of Erica Barry's beach house in Something's Gotta Give. A place for daily beach walks, a large kitchen for baking, a cozy family room for hanging out, and a home office with a bay window looking out toward the beach. To me, this is complete bliss! I wouldn't need to go anywhere.

Maybe there's a way to achieve the feel and look of our dream home without actually leaving the comfort of our homes? Of course, a pool in the middle of downtown may be a bit difficult to accomplish, but by adding small accents we can create the atmosphere of our ideal setting.

With this in mind, I thought I would share a few of my favorite coastal inspired items for the home. Maybe these will help inspire you to redecorate and transform your home into your dream getaway.

Add art and/or accents, such as a soft blue throw and table decor for a coastal feel.

Or try repainting in one of these coastal inspired hues.

2.jpg

You can never have too many pillows!  Switch out your existing sofa or bed pillows for a few of these.

3 pillow.jpg

AND layered texture is a must when it comes to coastal interiors...

texture.jpg

My thoughts and prayers go to those who are fighting to recover from this ruthless disease. Thank you to all of the nurses, doctors, first responders and essential workers.

Wishing everyone happiness and health in quarantine.
